Trauma-Informed Weight Loss Therapy

I offer Trauma-Informed counselling sessions for people who have struggled to find the motivation or the commitment to make dietary changes. More and more research shows that people who have struggled with weight gain are likely to be caught up in trauma that makes them reach for food as a safe place instead of feeling the emotions that come with trauma.

Much like substance misuse, finding comfort from our difficult emotions in food is common, but not as talked about as other substance misuse. What starts as a healthy coping strategy become unhealthy and affects many parts of our lives. Food restriction suddenly in the form of diets can bring up unresolved trauma and emotions that are difficult to cope with, which leads to distress and so-called 'yo-yo dieting'.

We can beat ourselves up about our lack of discipline, forever questioning why we can’t stick to a diet or why those last few grams won’t shift, even though we’ve been starving ourselves. I get it.

adopting new eating habits & routines

By looking back and learning how to cope with trauma and looking forward exploring how you would like you life to look, we can work together to create a happy and healthy new lifestyle.

I know how hard it is to adopt new eating habits and routines. Food is something that, unlike cigarettes, alcohol or other drugs, we can’t live without. By understanding the reasons behind our eating habits, we can take the negative emotions out of eating and food and adopt new patterns.

Specialist sessions offer you the chance to think about your relationship with food in a completely different way. We will look at your best hopes and remember what life was like before you felt the way that you do now.

I offer sessions in the counselling room or online. Due to the nature of the therapy, I cannot offer this as Ecotherapy.
