My journey to counselling and becoming a counsellor is a long and complicated one. In a nutshell, whatever the issue, the chances are I’ve experienced it or been affected by it.
My personal therapy started about 10 years ago when I realised that if I didn’t get some help for unresolved trauma, it would seep into every area of my life and take over. My children were young and I didn’t want their lives to be affected by what I had been through.
Following a short period in therapy, I felt so much better and continued with my life as a wife and mother and working as a Nutritionist helping people to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I soon realised that many of my clients were struggling with their physical health due to their own unresolved trauma.
No amount of dieting or healthy living was going to resolve their underlying issues and so it was going to be hard for them to maintain their goals. And I did not feel equipped to help my nutrition clients with the unresolved issues that they were facing.
So I took the decision to retrain and become a counsellor, which involved more therapy and a lot of personal growth. During that time, my children were becoming teenagers and my husband and I took the decision to divorce. Throw in a worldwide pandemic and you can see why I am no stranger to adversity!
Nowadays I am a single mum of two amazing teenage daughters (and our fabulous dog Bootsie) and navigating the crazy world of perimenopause to top it off.
I live in the beautiful Forest of Dean and find the peaceful nature of the forest is a tonic to the crazy life that we all find ourselves in.
